How to install gas shocks on a lid?
How to install gas shocks on a lid? Good question! Below we have listed 6 tips for you which will help you replace or install gas schocks on for example, a basement trap door, window or even a bed.
- Mount the gas spring so that the piston rod is pointing downwards most of the time. This keeps the seal lubricated and the gas spring lasts longer.
- Be careful with the rod (the chrome part of the gas spring). You do not want to damage it because you will risk leaking gas out of the gas spring. After that, the gas spring no longer works. It is best to leave the rod wrapped for packing until after assembly.
- Do not try to push the gas spring by hand to test if it works. You run the risk of shortening the life of the gas spring considerably, because the rod bends.
- When the gas spring has just come out of the packaging, it is often the case that the gas spring does not want to slide in. This is because the seal is a little stuck to the rod due to the length of time it has been in storage. We recommend that you simply mount the gas spring and apply a little extra force to get through this.
- Make sure that the gas spring is only loaded in the longitudinal direction, not transversley! If you use a ball joint on one side of the gas spring, you can prevent this to a large extent.
- It is important that the screws on the attachment are propertly secured. If the attachments do not align for mounting, continue to rotate so the rod rotates in the housing. Do not turn back or the attachment will not “moor” at the rod or body and the threads may break. So:
Time for assembly
When installing a gas spring on a lid, the same questions sometimes arise, such as whether the gas spring is broken if you cannot press it by hand. The answer to this question is probably “no”. Up to a certain number of Newtons, you can press the gas spring by hand. Another question that often comes up is whether it is appropriate in which position you mount the gas spring (the other way around is also possible). The answer to this is ‘yes’. It is important that your mount the gas spring with the piston rod downwards!
